Ice creeping across your Frigidaire freezer wall is not random. It follows a pattern. That pattern tells you exactly which part failed. Three components share one defrost circuit. One of them is bad. Here's how to read the ice and name it.

Why Ice Builds Up (and Why the Fridge Side Stays Fine)

Modern Frigidaire side-by-sides run an automatic defrost cycle every eight to twelve hours. A heater warms the evaporator coils just enough to melt any frost that's accumulated. The melt drips into a drain pan. The cycle ends. The freezer cools back down.

When the defrost circuit breaks, the cycle stops. Frost builds. It turns to ice. It keeps building because nothing is melting it. Meanwhile, the fridge side pulls air from the freezer — so as long as airflow isn't completely blocked yet, the fridge temperature holds. That's why the fridge feels fine while the freezer looks like a snow cave.

Three parts can break this cycle. Each one fails differently. The ice tells you which.

Cause 1: Defrost Heater (Ice on the Back Wall)

The defrost heater is a coiled element that wraps around or sits behind the evaporator. When it fails, frost accumulates directly on the back wall of the freezer — a thick, even sheet that grows from the bottom up. You may also notice the freezer gradually getting warmer over several days as the ice eventually blocks airflow to the coils entirely.

How to confirm: Pull food out and look at the back wall. If you see a uniform sheet of ice — not patchy, not in corners — the heater is the most likely suspect. A multimeter set to continuity across the heater terminals gives you a definitive answer. No continuity: the heater is open. Replace it.

Cause 2: Defrost Thermostat (Ice in the Top Corner)

The defrost thermostat is a thermal limiter — a small bimetal switch clipped to the evaporator. Its job: cut power to the heater once the coils reach a safe temperature, so the heater doesn't overheat the compartment. When the thermostat fails open, it never lets power reach the heater at all. The defrost cycle simply never runs.

The signature: ice builds in the upper corner of the freezer, nearest the evaporator inlet. It's often more concentrated than heater failure — a hard, dense clump rather than a full-wall sheet.

A failed thermostat also reads open on a continuity test at room temperature. That's the giveaway. A healthy thermostat is closed at room temperature (it only opens when hot). If yours reads open when cold, it's bad. Replace it.

Cause 3: Defrost Timer (Ice Everywhere)

Older Frigidaire side-by-sides use a mechanical defrost timer — a clock-driven cam that switches the fridge between cooling mode and defrost mode on a fixed schedule. Newer models use an electronic adaptive defrost control board instead, but the failure mode is similar.

When the timer sticks in cooling mode, the heater never gets called at all. Frost accumulates on every surface of the evaporator — not just the back wall or one corner, but everywhere. The result is ice all over the freezer: back wall, sides, ceiling, around the light housing.

To test a mechanical timer: locate it (usually behind the lower kickplate or inside the fridge near the temperature controls), insert a flat-head screwdriver into the advance slot, and manually turn it into defrost mode. If the heater kicks on within a minute or two, the timer was stuck. Replace it.

Electronic control boards can't be manually advanced the same way. If you've confirmed the heater and thermostat are both good, the board is next. Pull the fault codes if your model supports it — some Frigidaire side-by-sides will flash a sequence on the display if you hold two buttons simultaneously at startup.

Read the Ice First

Before you pull the back panel, look at where the ice is forming.

You'll be right more than 80 percent of the time. Each part is testable with a $15 multimeter. Each repair is completable in an afternoon with basic tools.

If the ice is ambiguous — or if you've replaced one part and the cycle still isn't running — all three components need to be tested in sequence. They're on the same circuit. They fail in combination more often than people expect.
