Here's what each code means, how to tell them apart fast, and what happens if you ignore either one.
LE: The Motor Is Locked
LE stands for Locked Motor Error. The washer's brain sent a command to spin. The motor didn't move — or moved wrong. The control board noticed the mismatch and stopped the cycle to protect itself.
Two parts cause the vast majority of LE faults:
The hall sensor. This small magnetic sensor sits near the rotor and tracks motor speed in real time. When it fails, the control board loses its feedback loop. It sees "no motion" and fires LE — even if the motor itself is fine. Hall sensor failure is more common than most owners expect, and it's a relatively straightforward replacement.
The rotor or stator. LG's direct-drive motor has no belt — the drum connects directly to the motor. That's why the brand holds up well long-term. But when a bearing seizes or the rotor magnet cracks, the motor physically can't turn. You'll often hear a grinding or humming before LE appears. That's the warning most people ignore.
What you can try yourself: Cut power for 60 seconds. Restart. If LE clears and the machine completes a cycle normally, log it. If it returns on the next load — especially under heavy spin — the sensor or rotor is failing.
What you cannot safely ignore: A seized bearing. If you hear grinding before or during the LE code, the damage is active. Running the machine forces the motor to work against a locked drum. That kills the stator. A bearing job becomes a motor replacement. Stop running the machine and get it diagnosed.
UE: The Load Is Unbalanced
UE stands for Unbalanced Error (sometimes displayed as uE with a lowercase u during the detection phase, UE once confirmed). The drum detects uneven weight distribution and stops to prevent violent shaking that could damage the drum bearings or the machine's suspension.
The first thing everyone does is redistribute the laundry. Often that works. But when UE keeps coming back — especially with normal-sized loads — the washer itself is the problem, not the clothes.
The real culprit most of the time: suspension rods. LG front- and top-loaders use four suspension rods (or springs, depending on model) to dampen drum movement. These wear out. A worn rod lets the drum shift further than it should during spin-up. The sensor reads that as an unbalanced load. You rearrange the clothes, the machine runs — but the rod is still worn. The problem comes back.
How to tell: Put the machine into a spin cycle with a balanced load — four to five bath towels works well. Watch the drum during spin-up. If it wobbles noticeably before the code appears, or if you can hear the drum contacting the cabinet, the suspension is worn. The clothes aren't the issue.
What you can safely keep running (temporarily): If UE only happens with a truly overloaded drum or a single heavy item like a wet comforter, the machine is working as designed. Reduce load size. Problem solved.
What you cannot safely ignore: Recurring UE on normal loads. Every cycle puts additional stress on bearings that are already absorbing abnormal movement. The suspension rods are a moderate repair. The drum bearings they're protecting are not.
60-Second Field Test to Tell Them Apart
Run this before anything else:
- Cancel the cycle. Cut power for 60 seconds.
- Reload the drum with a balanced, medium load.
- Restart on a normal cycle.
- Watch and listen.
LE comes back before or during spin — no amount of load adjustment will change it. The fault is mechanical or electrical, not the laundry.
UE comes back only during spin, and varies with load size — the machine is flagging an actual imbalance. Try a smaller, better-distributed load. If UE persists on a properly loaded machine, the suspension needs inspection.
The codes sound alike. The fixes are completely different.
Which One Is Urgent
LE with grinding: stop immediately. Every cycle makes it worse.
LE with no noise, cleared after reset: monitor closely. It will return.
UE on heavy loads only: safe to keep using with smaller loads short-term.
UE on normal loads, recurring: suspension rods are failing. Don't wait too long — bearings are expensive.
Neither code fixes itself. One just has a longer runway than the other.
