Three Things That Go Wrong
1. Door Alignment After Panel Install
Panel-ready doors require precise alignment. The panel adds weight and changes the swing geometry. After a panel install — or after the fridge is moved — the door can drift. It looks minor. It isn't.
A misaligned door breaks the seal. The fridge runs longer to hold temperature. You pay for it on the electric bill before you notice anything else. Eventually the compressor catches up to the load.
The fix: hinge adjustment, sometimes hinge replacement. Straightforward, but it has to be done right. Off by a millimeter at the hinge = off by a centimeter at the seal edge.
2. Ice Maker Line in the Kick Plate
KitchenAid runs the ice maker water supply line through the kick plate on several built-in models. That routing keeps the line invisible — which looks great. It also means the line is easy to kink during installation, or pinch when the unit is pushed back into the cabinet.
A kinked line restricts flow. The ice maker underfills, makes small cubes, or stops cycling entirely. Owners replace the ice maker first. That's usually not the problem.

3. Evaporator Fan Board Failure
The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer section through the fresh food compartment. KitchenAid built-ins use a dedicated control board for this fan on many configurations — not a direct motor connection.
When that board goes, the fan stops. Cold air doesn't move. The freezer holds temp. The fresh food section drifts warm. It's a confusing symptom if you don't know what you're looking at. It reads like a sealed-system issue. It isn't.
Board replacement is clean work. The symptom pattern — freezer fine, fridge warm — points straight at it once you know the architecture.
