Here's the order that makes sense.
Test 1: The Door Switch (No Tools Required)
The door switch tells the dryer the door is closed. If it fails, the dryer thinks the door is open and refuses to run. Full stop.
Open the door. Look for the small plastic plunger — usually white — that the door presses in when it closes. Press it manually with your finger. You should hear a faint click. No click means the switch is stuck or broken.
To confirm with a multimeter: set it to continuity mode. Disconnect power first. Access the switch (two screws on the door frame panel on most Maytag models). Touch probes to the switch terminals. Press the plunger — you should get continuity. Release it — continuity should break. If it reads the same either way, the switch is dead.

Test 3: The Start Switch (Multimeter Required)
You press Start, nothing happens. The door switch checks out. The thermal fuse is intact. Next suspect: the start switch itself.
The start switch is the push-button that initiates the motor circuit. It only needs to make contact for a fraction of a second. If the contacts are worn or burned, it never fires.
Access the control panel (usually clips or two screws at the top rear). Disconnect the wires from the start switch. Set multimeter to continuity. Touch probes to the terminals. Press the button — you should get continuity. Release — it should open. No continuity when pressed means the switch has failed.

What to Leave for the Tech
You've tested all three and everything checks out? The problem sits deeper.
Timer: Controls the entire cycle sequence. Mechanical timers fail gradually — contacts burn, advancing gets erratic. Testing requires checking voltage across multiple terminals under load. Not a multimeter continuity job.
Drive motor: If you hear a hum but no spin, the motor may be seized or have a bad start winding. Replacing a dryer motor means dismantling most of the cabinet. Labor-intensive. Worth confirming the diagnosis is right before ordering parts.
Main control board: On newer Maytag models with electronic controls, a failed board can kill all function. Diagnosis requires reading error codes, checking voltage rails, and sometimes a process of elimination. Boards are expensive — you don't want to swap one on a guess.
