It happens more than you'd think. And every time, we feel the same thing: we wish the customer had known to check this first.

Here are three "appliance problems" that almost always turn out to be something else entirely.


1. The GFCI Outlet Behind the Unit (Fridge, Dishwasher)

Your refrigerator died overnight. You open it in the morning and it's warm. First instinct: the compressor blew.

Maybe. But check the outlet first.

GFCI outlets — the ones with the TEST and RESET buttons — are installed in kitchens and anywhere near water. They trip. That's their job. A power surge, a minor moisture event, even a nearby appliance kicking on can cause them to cut power without warning.

The outlet behind your fridge is often the GFCI master for a whole circuit. When it trips, everything downstream goes dark. Your fridge included. No error code. No noise. Just… off.

What to do: Pull the fridge out a foot and look at the wall outlet. If it has a RESET button, press it firmly. Hear a click? Plug something small into the outlet to confirm power is back. Push the fridge back in.

The same applies to dishwashers. Many are on a GFCI circuit under the sink. Check inside the cabinet before you assume the control board is gone.

This takes two minutes. A service call costs real time and money. Check the outlet first.


2. The Water Shutoff Valve (Washer, Dishwasher)

Washer won't fill. Dishwasher runs a cycle and comes out dry. The machine behaves as if it's working — just no water coming in.

Before assuming a failed water inlet valve, check whether the supply water is actually on.

Behind every washer there are two shutoff valves: hot and cold. They're typically the lever or knob style, mounted on the wall behind the machine. They get bumped. They get closed during a plumbing visit and never reopened. In rental units, they're sometimes turned off between tenants and forgotten.

Dishwashers have a shutoff valve under the kitchen sink. Same idea. Small handle, easy to miss, easy to close by accident.

What to do: Look behind or beneath the appliance. Find the valves. They should be fully open — parallel to the pipe, not perpendicular. If they're closed, open them slowly. Run a short cycle and watch for fill.

This is a common false positive for inlet valve failure. The part isn't broken. The valve is just closed.


3. The Gas Supply Valve (Oven, Gas Dryer)

Gas oven won't ignite. Gas dryer runs but puts out no heat. The igniter clicks. The motor spins. Nothing happens.

The first thing to check isn't the igniter or the gas valve assembly inside the machine — it's the manual shutoff outside of it.

Every gas appliance has a dedicated shutoff valve on the supply line, usually behind the unit or on the line coming out of the wall. There's also a master valve at the meter. Both can be closed. Both are closed during any gas work in the home. Both are sometimes never reopened.

If you had any gas work done recently — a plumber, an HVAC tech, a utility company visit — this is your most likely answer.

What to do: Locate the shutoff valve on the gas line behind the appliance. The handle should be parallel to the pipe when open. If it's perpendicular, it's closed — turn it parallel. Then test the appliance. Also check whether your other gas appliances (stove burners, water heater) are working. If everything is out, the issue is upstream at the meter.

Note: if you smell gas, don't troubleshoot. Leave the home and call your gas utility from outside.
