What F-Codes Actually Are
Whirlpool's electronic control board runs a continuous self-check. When a reading falls outside a defined range, the board throws a fault code and locks the oven down. It's a safety mechanism, not a glitch. The code is the board's way of pointing at the problem — if you know how to read it.
Some codes indicate a failed sensor. Some point to the control board itself. A few flag the door latch. The repair cost swings dramatically depending on which one you're dealing with.
F2 — Oven Too Hot (or Thinks It Is)
F2 triggers when the oven temperature reads above its safety threshold — typically around 590°F for bake mode, lower for broil.
The most common cause is a failed oven temperature sensor (also called the RTD probe). The sensor sends resistance readings to the control board. When the sensor fails open or short, the board either reads runaway heat or no signal at all — and throws F2 either way.

F3 — Open or Shorted Temperature Sensor
F3 is the sensor code. Specifically, it means the control board is reading the sensor circuit as either open (broken wire, failed probe) or shorted (wires touching, probe failed low).
A tech will test sensor resistance at room temperature — a healthy Whirlpool RTD probe reads around 1,100 ohms at 70°F. If the reading is wildly off or fluctuates, the sensor is bad. If the sensor tests good, the harness between the sensor and the board gets checked next.
F3 is one of the more straightforward Whirlpool fault codes. Sensor replacement is a common outcome. Board replacement for F3 alone is rare.
F5 — Door Latch Failure
F5 codes relate to the door latch assembly — specifically the switch that tells the control board whether the door is locked.
This matters most during self-clean cycles, which require the door to be fully latched and confirmed locked before the oven will heat past normal cooking temperatures. If the latch motor runs but the switch never confirms lock, the board throws F5 and aborts.
Latch assemblies wear out. The motor can fail. The switch inside can stick. On some models, the latch wiring harness is the culprit. A failed latch during a routine bake cycle is less common — but F5 mid-bake usually means a switch has failed in a way that reads as "door open" even when it isn't.
Latch replacement is a moderate repair. It involves some disassembly, but it's not a board-level job.
