Why Year Three Specifically
New appliances break in two windows. The first is right out of the box — manufacturing defects that show up in the first 90 days. Your warranty handles those.
The second window opens around month 30 to 36. This is when normal wear accumulates. Heat cycles, vibration, hard water mineral deposits, and door seal compression all add up. Parts that were fine at year one start failing at year three.
That's when warranty calls drop. That's when our calls spike.
The Parts That Fail Most in Years 3–5
Compressor Start Relay (Refrigerators)
The start relay is a small, inexpensive component that fires the compressor every cycle. It takes the hit so the compressor doesn't have to.
After two to three years of daily cycling, the relay contacts wear. You'll hear a click and then nothing — fridge running but not cooling. Replace the relay and most refrigerators recover the same day.
Cost of ignoring it: the compressor takes over the load and burns out. That repair is ten times the price.
Water Inlet Valve (Washers and Refrigerators with Ice)
The water inlet valve controls water flow into the machine. In South Florida, hard water mineral buildup is relentless. The valve screen clogs. The solenoid weakens. By year three, it either sticks open (flooding the pan) or sticks closed (no water, error codes).
This is one of our most common year-three calls on LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool front-loaders.
Drain Pump (Washers and Dishwashers)
Drain pumps move water out at the end of every cycle. They run hot. They handle whatever makes it past the filter — hair, lint, food debris, coins.
By year three to five, the pump impeller wears down or the motor winding weakens. You get a machine that stops mid-cycle, an error code, or standing water at the bottom.
It's a predictable failure. If you notice drainage slowing before the full stop, that's the warning. Catch it then.
Control Board (Any Appliance)
Control boards are sensitive. Voltage spikes, South Florida humidity, and heat from adjacent components all degrade the board over time.
Year three to five is the typical failure window for boards in high-cycle appliances — washers, dishwashers, and high-end refrigerators with digital displays.
Board failures present as erratic behavior: cycles that won't complete, error codes that appear and disappear, controls that stop responding. Diagnosis matters here. Not every error code is a dead board — sometimes it's a sensor feeding bad data to a perfectly good board.
How to Build a Realistic Maintenance Budget
If your appliance is approaching year three, budget for one repair in years three through five. Not because it will definitely fail, but because the odds shift enough to plan for it.
A realistic reserve by appliance type:
- Refrigerator: Relay, valve, or fan work. Budget higher if it's a French-door or compressor-heavy model.
- Washer: Inlet valve, drain pump, or bearing. Front-loaders cost more than top-loaders to service.
- Dishwasher: Drain pump or control board are the two most common calls.
- Dryer: Often the most forgiving. Heating element and thermal fuse repairs are common and straightforward.
The bigger decision arrives at year five: repair or replace. If the repair cost exceeds half of replacement cost, most buyers replace. Below that, repair almost always wins — you keep the machine you know, avoid breaking in a new one, and skip the installation headache.
One Thing to Do Right Now
If your appliance is past year two, check the filter and coils. A refrigerator with dirty condenser coils runs hot and stresses the compressor. A washer with a clogged filter stresses the drain pump.
