Whirlpool is the largest appliance manufacturer in the US, and most of what's in American kitchens is either a Whirlpool or a Whirlpool-built unit (Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir all share parts and platforms). The good news is that Whirlpool's parts logistics are excellent and most of what fails is mechanical, not electronic — drive belts, motor couplings, ice maker modules, dishwasher pumps. These are real repairs but rarely catastrophic, and the cost-to-fix is almost always favorable on a 5-12 year-old machine.
On Whirlpool top-loaders this is one of three things: motor coupling worn out (most common, 20-minute repair), lid switch failed (3-minute fix once diagnosed), or drive belt slipping (older direct-drive models). We test all three in sequence — usually identified within 10 minutes.
The drive belt on a Whirlpool dryer runs around the drum and over the motor pulley through an idler. After 8-12 years the belt stretches or breaks, or the idler pulley seizes. Both are roughly the same repair — the cabinet has to come apart. About 90 minutes of labor, $80-$150 in parts.
On Whirlpool side-by-side and bottom-freezer fridges, 'not cooling' usually means the start relay (overload) or the evaporator fan motor. We diagnose by listening — if you hear nothing, it's the start relay. If you hear the compressor running but the freezer is warm, it's the evap fan. Both are $200-$300 repairs.
Whirlpool dishwashers have a drain pump under the tub and a check valve in the drain hose. Either can clog with food debris and prevent draining. We pop the lower spray arm, access the pump, and clear the debris — about $200 for a clean-out, more if the pump itself is failed.
Whirlpool gas ovens use a glow-bar igniter that draws 3.2-3.6 amps to open the safety valve. After 5-8 years the igniter can pull weak — under 3 amps — and the valve doesn't open, oven doesn't heat. We measure draw with a clamp meter, swap the igniter, confirm the valve responds. About $250 with parts.
Flat $75 diagnostic, applied to the repair. Whirlpool repairs are typically the most cost-effective in the industry — most jobs land at $150-$350. Drive belt and motor coupling repairs are the most common ($200-$300). Refrigerator sealed-system work is the high end at $600-$1,200 if it's needed. We carry the most common Whirlpool parts on the truck.
